Anti-angiogenic activity of Tamarind, Tamarindus indica (Linnaeus, 1855) leaf extract using chick Chorioallantoic Membrane (CAM) assay.

    The angiogenic activity of Tamarind (Tamarindus indica) leaf extract was evaluated through the in ovo chorioallantoic membrane asay (CAM) on fertilized chicken eggs. The eggs were incubated for 10 days and the different amounts of extract were impregnated on the CAM using filter paper disks with the following amounts: 3.4 µg and 1.7 µg. The eggs were incubated again for two days and were cracked open. The blood vessels on the CAM were manually counted and the results were 3, 4 and 6, respectively. One-way analysis of variance (p value>4.01 x 10-17) and post-hoc analysis showed that all variables are significant. The extract obtained from T. indica inhibited the angiogenesis activity on the CAM. The 3.4 µg extract inhibited angiogenesis activity at 74.60%±4.69%, 2.3 µg extract at 69.05%±8.03% and 1.7 µg extract was at 52.12 % ±9.33%. This shows that T. indica leaf extract exhibits an anti-angiogenic activity. The IC50 or  the median inhibitory concentration of T. indica is 1.896 µg. The secondary metabolic found in the leaves of tamarind namely: triterpenoids, steroids, flavonoids and carbohydrates may have contributed to its anti-angiogenic activity.
