In vitro thrombolytic activity of the ethanol free peel extracts of Musa Paradisiaca var. Saba (Banana) linn. 1753 using Clot Lysis method.

                Thrombolytics are used in the management of excessive or blood clot formation. They all work by activating the plasminogen into plasmin which dissolves and degrades the clots. But the major drawbacks with them are prolonged bleeding tendency and anaphylactic reactions. Natural plants and their products with thrombolytic potential and being economical and safe can be considered as alternative for cardiovascular diseases associated with thrombus formation. The purpose of the present study was to assess the thrombolytic activity of Musa paradisiaca var. saba peels using the In-vitro clot lysis assay method. The thrombolytic activity in the ethanol free peel extracts of Musa paradisiacal var. saba peels was determined wherein 20 mg/mL concentration of the peel extract had the highest thrombolytic activity with a value of 0.1655 g and 33.00% in mean weight of clot dissolved and mean percent clot lysis, respectively. Thrombolytic activity could due to the presence of flavonoids, tannins, terpenoids, alkaloids and carbohydrates. Moreover, the results show that the concentration of the peel extract of Musa paradisiacal var. saba is directly proportional and dose dependent because as the concentration increases, its thrombolytic activity also increases.
