The effect of Red Onion Allium cepa Linn., 1753 extract in reducing prednisolone-induced cortical cataract in albino rats.

To evaluate the effects of onion juice on Prednisolone-induced cortical cataract formation, seven albino rats were used in this study. For each trial, two rats were used. Both eyes of the rats (Group 1 rats and Group 2 rats) were induced with Prednisolone Acetate Ophthalmic Suspension USP 1% and the other one remaining rat (7th rat) as the normal control group without Prednisolone. The rats (Group 1 and 2) were exposed to UVA light within the laboratory period twice a week. After exposure to UVA light, both eyes of the 2 rats were induced with Prednisolone Acetate Ophthalmic Suspension USP 1%. The development of cataract in both eyes was assessed and documented by measuring lens opacity or rats' eyes every week before the induction and after the 1st and 2nd week of induction. Treatment with onion juice was done after 2nd week of Prednisolone induction. The eyes of Group 1 rat was treated with 50% onion juice while Group 2 rat was treated with 75% of the test solution. The results of the application of treatment were also documented by measuring the lens opacity of the rats every week after the 1st and 2nd week of treatment. Results from the induction of cataract and application of treatment were evaluated through the grade level of the cataract. In Trial 1 and 3, during the induction of cataract, Groups 1 and 2 rats developed Grade 3 cataract and that rat received 75% test solution developed Grade 4 cataract in their lens. In Trial 1, during application of treatment, the cataract of the rats who received the 50% test solution was reduced to Grade 2 (Group 1= 57.70% → 37.26%) and the cataract of the rats who received the 75% test solution was reduced to Grade 1 (Group 2= 79.73% → 4.28%). In Trial 2, the cataract of Groups 1 and 2 rats was reduced to Grade 2 (Group 1= 86.04% →44.23%; Group 2 = 95.83% →48.12%). In Trial 3, the cataract of Groups 1 and 2 rats was reduced to Grade 3 (Group 1 = 81.12%→54.55%; Group 2 = 89.65% → 60.00%). Between the two (2) concentrations of the onion juice test solution, there was no significant difference (P = 0.3472). In conclusion, instillation of onion juice into the rat's  eyes can effectively reduce Prednisolone-induced cortical cataract formation but there was no significant difference using the 50% and 75% concentrations.
