Ovicidal and Larvicidal Effects of Goldtree, Tabebuia donnel-smithii Rose, 1982 (Schropholariales: Bignoniaceae) Extracts on Diamnond BAck Moth, Plutella xylostella Linnaeus, 1758 (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae)

Insecticidal properties of fractioned extracts of Tabebuia donel-smithii flowers, leaves, barks and roots against Plutella xylostella eggs and larvae were investigated in the laboratory. The study aimed to determine the most effective concentration and the most active extract; evaluate the effects of the different extract concentrations on the treated eggs and larvae; and to characterize the phythochemical contents of the most effective extract fraction of T.donnel-smithii. Results showed that ethyl acetate fraction is the most effective against eggs (LC50=35.81 ppm) and larvae (LC50=2,019.08 ppm). Egg mortality was highest using 1,000 ppm ethyl acetate fraction (100%). Larval mortality was highest using 10,000 ppm ethyl acetate fraction (93.33%). The ethyl acetate fraction tested positive for saponins, flavanoids, alkaloids, terpenoids and tannins while negative for reducing sugars, anthraquinones and steroids. Ethyl acetate fraction of T.donnel-smithii is an effective botanical insecticide exhibiting larvicidal, ovicidal and antifeedant properties against P.xylostella thus it can be an alternative to synthetic insecticides. These properties can be attributed to the presence of phytochemicals in the extract namely: saponins, terpenoids, flavanoids, alkaloids and tannins. Furhter work is necessary to evaluate and characterize the active components of the extract fractions and its efficacy in the field.

Objectives

The study aimed to determine the ovicidal and larcividal effects of the flowers, leaves, bark and root of extracts of goldtree, T. donnel smithii on diamondback moth, P. xylostella. Specifically, the study aimed to:
1. determine the most effective and active extract fraction that will be produced from the different solvents through bioassay;
2. evaluate the effects of the most effective extract fraction on the eggs and third instar larvae; and
3. conduct phytochemical screening of the most effective extract fraction of T. donnel-smithii.
