Our current clinical experience suggests that enflurane is a potentially very useful agent in the parturient at term for vaginal delivery as well as for selected cesarean section delivery. Analgesia is adequate and effective with the patient being able to push during contractions Being an inhalation anesthetic, we can vary the concentation of the anesthetic and the level of analgesia from moment to moment by simply turning a knob. The possibility of airway obstruction and aspiration of gastric contents must always be borne in mind when using this technique as is usual for all anesthetic agents
As with any recently intoduced anesthetic agent, new ways of using is as well as watching out for undetected adverse effects is a constant product of continued clinical use. Our current series is relatively small and further investigation is necessary.
